From idea to a real life product can be long journey taking long time and many iterations. Discussing a product and asking for user input without having something concrete to start from can be abstract. An efficient way to gain input and make things concrete is by creating a prototype of the product long time before the real product is developed.
Prototypes can range from simple sketches to advanced simulations of the end product (in software projects clickable prototypes with scenario logic). There are many tools available for making prototypes and the investment in creating a prototype will often be low compared with the benefits that can be gained. Getting user feedback early and changing a prototype is far cheaper than changing a product that has been developed, tested and documented.
